I heard some elderly people went thru ascension blind believing that it was like dinner murder mystery theatre. They immediately called the safe word….
Any details on this story, cause my funnybone is itching to hear more!

Where did you hear this? It seems odd to me that a bunch of old people would drop $125 a person on something they knew next to nothing about. I know that on the My Haunt Life podcast Sabrina mentions that there were some people who called the safety word, especially when they went through the sense sacrifice sequence, but I don’t remember her mentioning them being elderly.
Speaking of safe words, it never occurred to me until just now but I never even got one…I wasn’t active on the boards when I first went to Ascension so there’s no way they knew that I was open to anything. I wonder if maybe it was just a fluke, or if they got rid of the safe word toward the end of the run (I went on the 2nd to last show I think) because no one was using it. I loved Ascension but, not knowing a TON going in, I think it was unfortunately built up by certain publications and gossip to be a much more extreme experience than it actually was.

@maxzumstein It was written on your intake sheet by Myles while you were in the photo room. Or at least, that’s how it was given to me.

@maxzumstein Me too! Myles was like, “Do you know what this place is? In case you feel done the word is…” And the music played too loud, I was moved on, and I said, “Well fuck. I guess I’m in til they tell me I’m out!”

My first runthrough Myles told me the safeword, but I have a vague memory of seeing it on paper the second time. Maybe the waiver or documentation or something. Or maybe I’m remembering it entirely incorrectly, but I vaguely recall something like what @lilmsfancpants is describing

I got the safeword and immediately wanted to say “bull. shit. that’s a really loaded safeword and a bunch of crap, I am NOT going to say that. I would rather say ‘pineapple.'”

@lilmsfancpants Unless he wrote it down and didn’t say anything about what he was writing down, I don’t think I got one. He did give me a very cool little speech that I wish I could remember, but it sounded like a speech that maybe everyone gets? Something about being present, keeping your eyes open, nothing being a coincidence, etc. It was a really fantastic “scene” but…yeah, lacking in a safe word. I don’t think it’s improbable though, given the dozens of people he was doing that to per night, that I just happened to slip through the cracks. It’s also possible maybe they embedded the safe word in the fine print on the back of the sheet. I didn’t read that. The receptionist whose name I don’t recall told me it was unnecessary and not to look at it.

@maxzumstein My first time through Myles had me watch him write it on the paperwork that Mary Lynn (the receptionist) gave out and then he stapled my picture to it. I never received the safe word on my second time.

@maxzumstein He did something really cool for me. He maintained eye contact with me the whole time while giving me that same schpeal, and wrote COWARD very slowly on my form… upside down (which was right side up for me) and never acknowledged it at all. Just a “Do you understand?” at the end of it before my girl Mary Lynn came and took me. Honestly one of the coolest moments of that night.
And yeah, second time though they just played with my hair and hugged me in that room. No safe words at all. I knew I’d be spending that evening mostly miserable and half naked, lol.

I think @prufrock5150 may be able to elaborate…

@tyson, IIRC (as I think this was shared by someone at the book-release party, but a certain forced removal by being threatened with immolation made my memory hazy), it was a quartet of elderly theatergoers who somehow mistook it for a traditional show, yet managed to make it all the way to the compound before being so visibly upset that it was clear they needed to be escorted to a safer space so they could collect their wits… which wound up being an area in which prop-weapons were held – which, of course, they mistook for the cache of death-instruments with which the OOA would shortly be dispatching them, and there was considerable energy spent trying to talk them out of calling the authorities…

Thanks @prufrock5150 I feel like everyone can benefit from the hilarity in that story! I hope someone else can elaborate.
