Painting: The Little Foot Page, Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale (1872–1945)

      Painting info:
The work is based on the story of Burd Helen, a tragic heroine from Scottish balladry, who dressed as a boy page to follow her cruel lover on foot while he rode on horseback. After bearing him a child, she was finally acknowledged by him and they married. Here she is shown secretly doffing her female attire and cutting her long hair, in preparation for her journey. Within a few years of the exhibition, modern female art students were cutting their hair in “page boy” style.

Nearly missed this one, thanks for making the post @kipsie. I think those of us who are supporting either “side” in this experience can all relate here.

Not all those who wander from the path we thought was laid out for us are lost. Simple. And Burd Helen is the tragic story of a girl who changes everything about herself to literally chase after the man she loves. Does it matter that she eventually wore him down? That he settled for her? She crawled after the potential of a positive outcome and suffered for it.

What path are you following? What do you think is at the end?
