Been awhile since I posted a theory so figured today was as good a day as any.

As I’m sure most people here know (due to Jurassic Park introducing the theory into the lexicon) Chaos Theory deals with predicting the unpredictable.

Let’s look at the clean definition without diving into cloning dinosaurs.

Chaos theory is a part of mathematics. It looks at certain systems that are very sensitive. A very small change may make the system behave completely differently. Very small changes in the starting position of a chaotic system make a big difference after a while.

      Now what are Fractals?

A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop. Driven by recursion, fractals are images of dynamic systems – the pictures of Chaos.

In simplest terms think of a Mountain from afar. Now you get closer and only see the peak of the mountain(looks the same doesn’t it?) Now get even closer and just look at a pebble on the mountain. We still can see the shape of the peak in the pebble. Nature is filled with Fractals. Complex systems are made up of fractals.

This whole experience is made up of chaotic fractals.

OOA>OSDM>Creators>Investors. It’s a never ending system of complex fractals. The closer you get, it still repeats the same pattern. All of this does. Every player becomes predictable in it’s own inherit chaos.

And that’s us looking at them, but not them looking at us. We are the truest chaos. Complete unpredictability. That’s why any attempt to control the complex system that is our community will be met with (even if eventually) absolute failure. You cannot control a complex system like this. There are things we can do that set off a domino effect if you will (or better yet…a butterfly effect). A collective group such as this is bound to be uncontrollable. This goes for the community and even BOS to a certain extent.

You cannot control a complex system and that is why Horace and the OSDM will fail. Their attempts to consistently control a narrative out of their hands shows a complete disregard to the complex systems that are humanity. Which really could be a reason why they are so damn set on controlling emotional indexes, but people change emotions every day. The same thing that made someone react on Tuesday, might not make them react the same the following Tuesday. It’s completely unpredictable.

Now we have the leg up on them because THEY are predictable. Fractals remember? A pattern that frequently repeats itself. By observing their own fractal patterns we can predict where they will move and how. In an effort to create a complex system with us, they have made themselves a simple one.

Except for two players. Mason and Noah. The two most unpredictable people in this whole situation. They have routinely defied expectation, shown to be distinct but uncontrollable personalities. We have zero clue how they will end up fitting into all of this. They are their own complex systems.

Now I could be completely talking out my ass here, but having read up on all of this I think it applies and it’s useful for us going forward (since the only way out is through) is to concentrate on the fact that our unpredictability, and smallest of actions affect the outcome of everything in a significant fashion.

      So the questions are these:
What are the patterns we can see? How can we predict the next move?

And how do we become chaos?

@thebuz Wow, this is awesome. This is a different and clever way of thinking: pointing out patterns that would help us possibly predict what’s to come from the complex systems that have presented themselves.

And how do we become chaos?

This is an important question. How do we become chaos? Aren’t we already, seeing as though we are NOT predictable? I would say we maybe once were chaos and have become our own complex system, so how do we get back to being unpredictable?

Noah and Mason go against the grain. It’s as if they already know what is predicted of them, and they pull the rug out from under everyone and do something erratic or unexpected. We would be smart to try to mimic these, and learn to be a constant chaos.

Are we trying to learn to be like Noah and Mason: guided by chaos and unpredictable?

@shankfx22 Is this when we find out that Anoch is really Nyarlathotep, the crawling chaos? If Anoch is one of the Outer Gods, we’re fucked…

@kipsie If that is in fact the case, that is 100% terrifying.

@thebuz This is absolutely gorgeous. Perhaps this is why Noah and Mason are the most interesting. They are the most unpredictable. But here’s the thing, if you’re paying enough attention and have enough exposure, everyone is predictable. Chaotic does not necessarily mean unpredictable. You just have to figure out what drives them, where their most basic, most simple, most authentic motivation lies. Some people just want to watch things burn. Others want to rebuild for the sake of… bettering what was there before? Controlling the new iteration of what was destroyed? Offering up a worse version for the sake of spite? I feel like there are a couple of “universal” emotions that motivate actions: hate, love, and fear. Sure, these fraction and branch and are not simple in the slightest. To me, fear is the only really terrifying one, as it has the highest possibility for unpredictable actions. So far, I don’t think we’ve seen either Noah or Mason do anything out of fear.

@chelsea Bringing up fear as the #1 motivation to being unpredictable is so very valid and on point. With fear as the basis of being unpredictable, I have to wonder if Noah and Mason are doing anything out of fear, what drives that fear? It’s easy to mask with another motive on the surface. Maybe Noah is fearful of failing? Maybe Noah is fearful of his father in some ways (wouldn’t be surprised with the puppy story and all…). We still don’t know much about Mason, but what could be his fears that drive him to do what he does? He started his own organization based off the OOA and is relying more on science, he goes back and forth with his emotions to gain information from us that he already has, he resorts to violence, etc. They are the most unpredictable of anyone else, so what drives their fear?

@chelsea Well that’s the whole idea behind Chaos Theory.

Because complex systems (such as this community) are wholly unpredictable they in a sense are predictable. You can predict them to be unpredictable. However that only helps with “Well this will cause the community to be in an uproar!” But not necessarily “This is how we can silence the community.”

But even then, we can and will never act the same way twice. That’s the key.

The smallest of actions from us can and will result in large reactions.

@thebuz would you argue that going to the Mid-Season event, as Mason suggested, or even some of us going to the Briarberg meeting this week is us as a community being predictable, though? If so, how would we turn a known behavior like like that to our advantage, towards chaos?

@wanda102 Well that is the predictable pattern that “They” focus on. Show us the shiny object and watch us jump. That’s what makes them believe they can control us by denoting our emotions.

However there is zero way for them to predict how we will react under whatever circumstances they put us under.

      Predictably unpredictable.
